The Sneaky Tiki

Tiki Decorations

Tiki Decorations By The Pool

The backyard pool is the center of summer activity. A fun way to spice up a Saturday night is to turn the pool into a lagoon and the backyard into a Hawaiian paradise with Tiki decorations.

Tiki bars are a must at any island party. How are you going to serve an ice cold strawberry daiquiri or mai tai to the tourists without a proper poolside lounge? Your classic Tiki bar is U shaped for easy bartender access and portable to allow for a rolling luau party. If you get tired of one end of the island, or the natives (kids) get too restless, simply move the bar into a quieter (and dryer!) location and order another cocktail. These portable bars can also be purchased with thatch roofs just in case of a light tropical rain.

One of the neatest types of Tiki decorations is a Tiki mask. These masks are actually meant as either wall Tiki decor or as a free standing statue. They generally range in size from 12" for a wall mounted mask to 60" for a statue mask. Imagine escorting your guests to the poolside Tiki bar through a row of leering Tiki masks, back beautifully illuminated by flaming torches.

For the mainlander who just can not leave the island, a permanent Tiki hut may be just what you need to turn the pool area into a Hawaiian beach. However, to truly change the backyard into a tropical paradise, there are several reality checks that have to be addressed.

The first is simply space. Tiki huts come in many different sizes, but most will have a considerable footprint, and most importantly, are relatively permanent structures.  Unlike the mobile Tiki bar on wheels, these huts are larger, heavier and designed to stay in one location.

Another concern is weather. It is well known that the people of Fargo enjoy a good tropical pig roast as much as the citizens of Key West. The problem is that North Dakota gets about 15 minutes a year of warm enough temperature to put on grass skirts. Colder temperatures and howling blizzards will also have a detrimental effect on thatch roofs.  A portable Tiki bar can be stored away for the winter. A Tiki hut will have to stand in the elements.

Whether you go all the way and turn your backyard into a pure island escape, or simply hang a mask on the wall, Tiki decorations will add a tropical flair.
